Hello - I've not tried this before but at this point I'll try anything.  My 55 year old brother has a brain tumor and experiences severe left side weakness as if he has had a stroke.  He's terrified of falling getting in and out of the tub.  His financial situation for right now does not allow for putting in a walk-in handicap shower stall.  Currently he showers in an outdoor shower that has running hot water.  With the onset of the cooler months, this will not be possible.  He has a home health aide that comes in twice a week, but he's terrified he's going to fall.  If anyone has a suggestion, I'd be very grateful.  Thank you.

This is just the kind of question we're here to field.

Replacing the entire stall should not be necessary.  A shower transfer bench and/or bathtub rail are much less expensive.  Transfer benches will run in the $100 neighborhood and bathtub rails as little as half that, so you can see this is much more affordable than a remodel.

Strikehawk, are you talking about a lift, or a shower chair?  I've seen some lifts that were very expensive, but I agree that a shower chair is a very inexpensive fix.  I've never dealt with a bathtub rail, but I'm assuming that would be as cheap or expensive as you wanted it to be.  I personally wouldn't be comfortable installing it myself, so I would have to get someone to do it for me, like my facebook statuses.  Angies List reviews local contractors and handy-men.
